Definition of insomnia can be simplified into 3 main categories.

Inability to attain sleep. This is due to difficulty in falling sleep. However, once attained, deep sleep is assured

Get into sleeping mood easily. But unable to attain deep sleep

The last group belongs to the group that has insufficient sleeping hours, even though they are able to fall asleep easily and is able to attain deep sleep.

Main Culprits for Insomnia They are many factors which can cause insomnia and they are.

Drugs: Consuming drugs affects the brain’s activities, making it hard for the abuser to obtain sleep. Over consuming medical drugs will prevent you from sleeping as well.

Disorder of Hormones: For the females, estrogen is an important factor in their ability to rest and have a good night rest. Any sudden changes can easily cause sleeping disorder.

Injury : Injury can prevents an individual from finding the sweet spot to doze off easily without pain. Moreover, the injured person could wake up in pain if the body shifts and apply pressure to the injured parts.

Jet Lag: Traveling to a different time zone destroys the natural sleeping cycle that the body is used too. For example, night time in America is day time in Asia, which gives the body the impression that it is time to sleep if the traveler is in bright daylight in Asia.

Medications: Some medicines contains stimulants which increase the activities of the brain.

Physical Bed: Uncomfortable beds can cause disruption in sleep. Uncomfortable beds will cause the body to constantly adjusting itself, trying to find a sweet spot to sleep. The constant shifting could easily disturb your sleep. If bed bugs exist in the bed, sleep can be disrupted as well.

Shift Work : Instead of resting at night, the body works and cannot get used to sleeping in broad daylight.

Sleeping Cycle: By not having a constant sleeping time, the brain will have a difficult time “convincing” the body it is time to sleep.

Mental stress: Problems such as money, loans, job stress prevent us from relaxing our mind, which in turn causes insomnia. A recent death of a loved one can also cause stress that cause sleeping disorder. Stress is the most common reason for sleeping problems for people.

The reasons for insomnia are inexhaustible. However the above list consists of almost 90% of the known causes for insomnia.
