Anxiety is More Prevalent than Depression in Older Adults
Englewood, FL (PRWEB) August 12, 2006
Dr. Carolyn Chambers Clark, Author of Living Well with Anxiety, reports a new study showing that generalized anxiety is more common in older adults than depression.
According to Dr. Eric J. Lenze, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine, doctors often think that anxiety is a part of normal aging and they don’t diagnose or treat it, “when, in fact, anxiety is quite common in the elderly and can have a serious impact on quality of life.”
Untreated anxiety can lead to poor memory, and even worse, anxious depression — a condition that is more difficult to treat and carries a higher risk of suicide.
