Suffering From Anxiety

August 5th, 2010

(GAD) if you often feel anxious about your family, health or work even when there are no signs of trouble. Anxiety is a natural reaction that prepares us for danger, or important events. The problem with those who suffer from GAD is that their feelings interfere with their work and life.

Someone with GAD may have a good job, a happy marriage and well-adjusted kids, but worries constantly that it is all going to fall apart. Constant worrying may result in chronic physical symptoms, such as aches and pains, irritability and fatigue. GAD may be diagnosed when exaggerated worrying lasts for more than six months.

One major approach to treating GAD is cognitive behavioral therapy.

1. Understand how you feed your negative

thoughts- Therapists can teach you how to

change your anxious reactions.

2. Reality-test your thinking- For example,

you’re doing well at your job but constantly

worry you’ll be fired. Using cognitive

behavior therapy, a therapist may start by

analyzing the facts, such as whether you’ve

gotten a good review lately and whether others

in your company are really being fired.

3. Engage in a five-minute worry session- Using

this technique twice a day can give you time

to be worried, but not let it affect the rest

of your life. You can worry all that you

want, type your feelings into the computer, or

record yourself. By giving your worry an

outlet, you can begin to refocus your thinking

and change your perspective.

4. Learn basic stress-management techniques- It

is important to know how to unwind when you

are anxious, and learn to prevent a build-up

before it begins.

If cognitive behavioral coping skills fail to control your condition, counseling and/or medication can be considered. Medication will not necessarily stop the worry, but can ease it. Medications prescribed for GAD may have troublesome side effects, so make sure to monitor your intake with your doctor. Use the proper steps to help you get your anxiety under control before it controls you.

July 7th, 2010

Anyone who suffers from severe anxiety symptoms knows how terrifying an anxiety attack can be.  Anxiety can have an adverse impact on your entire life which is why it’s critical that you learn how to treat anxiety so that you never have to have another attack again.

Most medical advice works around masking the symptoms with drugs, but if you really want to be free you have to break the cycle of fear that keeps those attacks coming.  Once you learn to do that, you need never fear anxiety again … and your life will be the way it once was – free from the stress of anxiety and fun!

The thing about anxiety is that it creates a cycle where the fear of the next attack actually puts you in an anxious state, thus bringing on the attack! However, if you learn how to treat anxiety by dealing with this fear, then you can break the cycle.

Lets say you notice that you often have an attack in a crowded place like a restaurant, a nightclub or even the grocery store on Saturday morning (this is actually quite common).  Once you notice this happening, the next time you are going to one of these places you will be worried and anxious about having an attack.  This in itself sets the stage for severe anxiety symptoms and before you know it, you are avoiding all the places that might trigger an attack!

Needless to say, if you let this escalate you will soon be avoiding most places and your life enjoyment will be severely diminished – perhaps you are already at this point or near it?

Luckily, you can stop this cycle from happening.  But what you need to do is not be afraid of the next attack.  I know this is easier said than done, but there are some things you can do to distract your mind from it.  One thing that I like to do is just rub my forehead whenever I start to feel anxious – I know it sounds kind of stupid but it actually works to diminish the severe anxiety symptoms that I might feel in some situations!

It might take some work, but if you can learn how to treat anxiety by nipping it in the bud, you will soon find that you don’t have any anxiety attacks at all and you can finally go back to living your life without fear of anxiety!

Suffering from the Problems of Anxiety Disorders

June 9th, 2010

Anxiety is a state of mind wherein a person experiences a number of emotions at the same time such as nervousness, fear, uneasiness, worry to name a few. This is accompanied by physical symptoms such as palpitation , headache, unsettled stomach, chest pain and the like. This can be triggered off due to a number of reasons such as one’s circumstances, certain traumatic experiences or anything perceived by the person as traumatic. When this anxiety extends for a prolonged period it is time to be warned and seek professional help. This condition of the person is known as anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder is a rather common problem especially in today’s stress filled world. But the bigger issue is that we don’t treat it as a problem in the first place. Most people who suffer from anxiety disorders and the people around them tend to consider it just as mood swings and the temperament of the individual and thus, overlook the seriousness of the issue. But the point to be noted here is that the symptoms should not be ignored as timely help can cure the person completely.

Anxiety disorders are of different types. People develop anxiety disorders for various reasons and under various circumstances. One should understand the reasons thoroughly to be able to treat the patient. A good talk with the patient along with a standard questionnaire which could include questions about the family, friends, likes and dislikes of the patients would help in finding out the root cause which has led to the anxiety disorder and thus, would help in the treatment. The various kinds of anxiety disorders  include panic disorders, kinds of phobias like agoraphobia (which is the fear of being in a social setting), stress disorder, social anxiety to name a few.

Anxiety disorder symptoms would vary depending upon the individual and also with the kind of disorder that the patient is suffering from. The good thing is that there is treatment for this condition. When in the pursuit of anxiety help, it would be better to know the kind of anxiety that is the cause of trouble. One should also find out the situations which cause the condition to aggravate. This would go a long way in deciding the treatment and making the treatment more effective. Anxiety and depression go hand in hand. People who develop some sort of anxiety disorder tend to undergo a state of depression if timely treatment is not provided. People who suffer from depression tend to be sad, irritable and always have negative thoughts.

People suffering from anxiety disorders need to be made aware of their problem. They need to use self help methods also to curb these issues.  One can take prescription drugs from the doctor to treat the problem and if not suitably convinced can opt for alternative treatments for anxiety disorders such as ayurveda, acupuncture , acupressure, aroma therapy, yoga and the like. Many people do try alternative treatment for anxiety disorders even though they are not endorsed by any legal authority. If the anxiety attacks cease to arise it does not necessarily mean that the person is fully cured but there can always be a relapse of these problems. Therefore,  it is of utmost importance that the patient undergoes a thorough treatment that deals with the root cause of the problem so that the person can continue to lead a quality life.
