Insomnia Among Women Far Grater Than Among Men

March 24th, 2010

According to the new research women are 20 per cent more prone to develop insomnia than men. This may be caused by snoring of the partner or stress and anxiety that is connected to our fast living life.

A year-long investigation by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) into the sleeping habits of more than 2,000 women aged from 18 to 64 has found that almost two-thirds had between one and three disturbed nights every week. Almost 70 per cent said they frequently experience a sleep problem. This compares to 52 per cent of men who say they suffer insomnia a few nights a week or more.

The study reflects research in a new book by the founder of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr Meir Kryger, author of Can’t Sleep, Can’t Stay Awake: A Woman’s Guide To Sleep Disorders. ‘Unlike men, women have sleep problems related to hormonal and bodily changes from menstruation, pregnancy and menopause,’ he said.

As per what Dr Kryger reports it is highly likely that women are very much undiagnosed by the doctors who lack education in sleeping difficulties area. This puts at risk the patient who may be treated for diabetes as well as obesity rather than actual sleeping disorder. Sleeping difficulties among women are caused because of the demands of the nowadays 24/7 life as well as growing role of the women in family and society.

I certainly must agree with all written in Guardian article. In today’s fast growing and demanding world, women who are much more underestimated in any field, struggle to get a good night sleep.

I have been in a battle to have a good night sleep for three years and there wasn’t anything that could have helped me. One day I attended workshop that was help in Cambridge by great composer with the knowledge in the sleep difficulties field. What he has done was to detaily discuss the background of his music as well as the reason why women cannot get a good quality sleep. I found this workshop very informative and was ready to apply all what he has suggested. Exercises become my number one thing I could not leave without. I couldn’t imagine that it can be so addictive doing exercises. 30 min running is a must for me know.

The other thing I started to apply was meditation. Five minutes a day due to busy routine was fairly enough for me. Meanwhile I was also playing meditation music called alphamusic in the background and this music put my brain into relaxed alpha state. I was doing the same things each day and night – meditation and exercises were a must for me along with alpha music. My life has changed ever since. My insomnia started disappeared, when I woke up which barely happened, I got slept in just few minutes. At the moment I am leading a normal life with less stress and anxiety as well as I am not letting anything stopped this. That day when I attended that workshop was the new beginning for me and all my relatives.
