What’s The Difference Between Social Fears And Shyness?

If you are simply shy, then you don’t want a doctor bombarding you with drugs and other therapies. Shyness usually manifests at a young age, where the person feels nervousness and fear in an unfamiliar social situation or when they encounter new people. Much of the nervousness revolves around the feeling that they will do something to look foolish in front of the people, or that they will have negative judgments made of them.

This phenomenon often fades as the person grows older and learns that they can do public things without looking foolish, and their confidence builds. When the fears of social circumstances get worse and can’t simply be “gotten over” with a little work, they are identified as genuine anxiety disorders.

Social fears that require medication and therapy, meanwhile, manifest in many different ways. For example, the fear of public speaking, while it resembles shyness at first, can make a person completely freeze as soon as they step into the spotlight. A public speaking phobia can in fact prevent the person from even stepping onto the stage in the first place. They can experience anxiety at such a high level that it makes them physically sick. And sometimes they are so debilitated that they plan their whole lives around trying to avoid having to speak in public.

Sometimes people who endure these social fears begin to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs that lower their anxiety levels and help them be less afraid of social situations. This self-medication, of course, is not a good solution, and there are several other better ways to approach these fears. One solution is real medication, as certain antidepressants are known to help stabilize mood disorders. Cognitive therapy also helps in many cases, as the person learns to stop the internal cycle of thoughts that often reinforces the fear and amplifies it. When ordinary shyness turns into something socially crippling, that’s when a real social anxiety has developed, and medical treatment of some sort is usually the best solution.
