Letting Go Of Clutter In Five Steps

May 27th, 2010

Letting go of clutter can be very hard when we have emotional attachments to the items. But if you want to improve your life and the space in your home, then it’s a necessary task. If you’re finding it difficult then here are our top five tips to get started.

1) Start Small

Letting go of clutter can seem like a never-ending task if you try to do it all in one go. To make it easier on yourself, start small by picking a small area of your home. Once this area is finished, start on the next section. Doing it in this way stops you getting overwhelmed and also helps to keep you motivated when you start seeing the results.

2) Note Down Important Memories

Some of the things we own are full of memories, which mean we develop an emotional attachment to the item. You need to realize that you can keep hold of the memories without holding onto all of the things. Just take photographs of the items you want to remember, and make little notes about them in a ‘clutter journal’ before getting rid of the items themselves.

3) Don’t Keep So Many Similar Things

Some of us have so many of very similar items. For example, you might have kept all the drawings your kids ever did for you. Although it might break your heart to get rid of them, the truth is that having so many means you’ll barely have time to look at them anyway. Choose a few items to keep that mean a lot to you and your kids, and include photographs of the rest in your clutter journal.

4) If You Haven’t Used It For A Year, Are You Really Still Going to Use It?

Sometimes items get shoved in drawers and we completely forget we even had them. If you come across something like this, then think rationally about whether you’ll really need it. This is the time to be firm with yourself – if you haven’t used it for so long then the chances are that you won’t use it – get rid of it!

5) Keep Your Goals In Mind and Feel Good About What You’re Doing

Letting go of clutter is never going to be easy. We all have emotional attachments to material things that are hard to rationalize away. When things get tough remember that you’re doing it for a good cause. Anything you give away to charity is going to help people less fortunate than you, and it’ll also benefit you in the long run. Less physical clutter means less mental clutter, and much more space in your home!

Letting go of clutter isn’t easy, but you can do some things to make it easier. For some easy to follow advice on clearing the clutter, check out Clear Clutter Blog today.

How To Get Rid Of Clutter – A Step By Step Guide

May 22nd, 2010

Living in a cluttered environment can affect your sense of well-being. Whether it’s your home or office that’s cluttered, it causes stress and reduces productivity and you may not even be aware of it. Although many people recognize that getting organized will greatly improve their lives, they have a difficult time getting it done. Below are some tips to help you get started.

First, you must keep your end goal in mind and celebrate each milestone to keep yourself motivated. Many folks put off getting organized because they are so overwhelmed by how big the job is, they just never get started. So, by focusing on what you want to accomplish in the end, you’ll be able to keep yourself going until the project is finished.

If you’re the sort of individual that gets energized by a goal but loses motivation if you can’t finish a project in one day, you will have to change your thinking. It may not be possible to get it all done in one day and so you may have to take it in stages over several days or week-ends.

Once you’ve decided on a goal, pick up some inexpensive cardboard file boxes at your local office supply store. You’re going to use these to sort your stuff. Label one “Keep”, one box “Garage Sale” or “Donate” and one box “Garbage”. You will then take these boxes to each room to begin sorting through everything and placing items in the labelled boxes.

There are some rules that you should follow when going through this process however. If you’re sorting clothes for example and you come across an item that you haven’t worn in more than a year or that doesn’t fit, get rid of it. If you’re sorting through magazines and you haven’t opened any of them for more than 3-6 months – get rid of them. If you’re sorting through broken toys that you keep meaning to repair but haven’t found the time, throw them out. And, if you’re sorting through old paid bills, keep a least one year’s worth but if you’re sorting income tax returns, keep those papers going back for at least 7 years.

Finally, put your “keepers” away but if you find that you haven’t got enough space, you may need to pick up some storage containers. If that doesn’t help then you’ll need to evaluate if you’ve got an emotional attachment to your stuff.

Does throwing things away cause you anxiety? Does it feel wasteful to you? If you don’t have a recycling program in your neighborhood, then you won’t be able to sell or donate your broken items so you’ll need to throw them out. If this is what is causing your anxiety, then you will need to work on your mental clutter before you’ll be able to let go of your physical clutter.
