Young Writer Tackles Mental Illness in Humorous Novel
Willis, TX (PRWEB) June 23, 2006
Wet Dreams and Zoloft — the title alone is brilliant, but the coming-of-age tale that follows a teenager who suffers from agoraphobia and panic disorder is just downright sidesplitting.
Who would have thought that panic attacks, therapy sessions, and psychiatric medication could be so funny? Well, author Jason Madsen, who suffers from agoraphobia and panic disorder himself, seems to think they can be.
“I think there’s a misconception with agoraphobia,” says 22-year-old Madsen. “For one thing, if you look in the dictionary it throws something at you about fear of open spaces. I don’t fear open spaces, I fear situations that I can’t get out of. Also, people seem to think that every agoraphobic is some 100-year-old housebound man, also not true. Agoraphobics are everywhere — they’re lawyers, teachers, reporters, students, actors. We leave the house, we’re just always a little more on edge when we do.”
Wet Dreams and Zoloft, now available at all major bookstores, follows eighteen-year-old Kyle Crane, who is pretty much the poster boy for problems. His mother went crazy and ran off to Spain, his father has been missing for years, and he hasn’t left his house in…well, for as long as he can remember — but his mom keeps paying the bills, so he’s not complaining. If those things weren’t bad enough, one day an interesting mishap with a tennis ball introduces him to Angela, a free-spirited, and sometimes…aggressive young girl who makes it her mission in life to bug the hell out of him. Before he knows it, Kyle finds himself on a road trip with Angela to California to find his missing father, and hopefully some answers to his problems.
“I guess I just got sick of all these books and movies out there that treat mental illness so seriously,” explains Madsen. “I mean, yeah, it’s a serious thing, but I mean, it can be funny too and lighthearted too.”
