You Really Need A Vacation

July 31st, 2010

May be you have felt that your life is one big roller coaster ride in which, whichever way you turn the ride gets faster and faster.

Your boss maybe demanding asking more and more from you, your partner may complain of you being workaholic and have no time for her or your children, your elderly mother may be relying on you to keep her company and manage her affairs as she had a fall recently. At the end of the day you may have felt you had enough and at a loss what to do, whom to turn to for support and how to let off steam to regain your calmness.

After teaching yoga to concerned and stressed out students, I’ve observed that the majority of individuals are so concerned over meeting the demands of others, that they live life on overdrive.

Odds are that if you can identify with even one of the five symptoms we will discuss here, you’re probably already overstressed, worried and taking on too much emotional baggage.

Below are some signals that should alert you to needing a vacation. You’ve always got aches, pains, and headaches. You can’t focus on your work, yet you work lengthy shifts. Your relationship can suffer when you bring work home with you and this puts up barriers. Most of the times, you are exhausted and worn out. It takes double the usual amount of time and effort to make yourself get up and go. It seems like your reason for being is gone. You’re grouchy with your coworkers and also with your family members. Your heart rate is greater than usual. You may find that you frequently have held your breath unknowingly and caused an increase your blood pressure.

If this sounds familiar to you, what can you do to calm the overwhelming worry that keeps running through your head. What actions can you take to relieve some of the demands that push and pull you in too many directions? What can one do to manage and lessen stress?

Take a vacation and relax.

All of us require rest, relaxation and some peace of mind. When was the last time you had a couple days off, or a vacation? Vacations may be stressful, particularly if you must meet and juggle your kids’ and spouse’s demands.

Several days’ respite from your usual routine can invigorate you and give you a fresh viewpoint as well. While you’re on vacation, try to take in as much fresh air as you can, go on lots of walks, eat right and drink plenty of water. Use the location to lie down, go to sleep earlier, read a book, do crossword puzzles, or any activity which gets your mind off the problems back home. Getting away for a few days can provide a new perspective, and even though the problem will still be waiting for you at home, the time away can help you figure out how to manage your troubles.

Routinely stressing yourself out, working too much, and avoiding rest and relaxation can damage your relationships and cause serious, chronic health problems, including diabetes, stroke, hypertension and insomnia.

Book a short vacation for a few days if you need to relax because life is getting you down, are overworked, worried or tired and low. Remove yourself from the daily grind, and the things you do on a daily basis to recharge your energy and feel encouraged.
