Are There Any Medical Treatments For Panic Attacks?

April 15th, 2010

In today’s society, panic attacks are becoming more and more common. But in this article, we won’t talk about that. We want to know, if there are any medical solutions to this problem. So, are there or will there be any long-term medical treatments for panic attacks? This is not a simple question.

Why? Because panic attacks are not so simple. To tell you the truth – it doesn’t seem very likely that there will be a pharmaceutical solution to treat panic attacks any time soon. Not today and not in the near future, at least.

To understand why, we must take a look at what exactly panic attacks are and why do they occur. Panic is a very complicated inborn survival oriented response. It’s a mechanism for reacting to a threat that involves a wide array of both physical and psychological systems.

This is our natural alarm system. We are all born with it and it’s perfectly normal to have it. The problem arises when it becomes too sensitive, when it triggers even in non-threatening conditions.

But as we have said, this is a very complicated phenomenon. It involves many different systems and there is no one single cause. That is the reason why there is no magic pill.

Pills that are used today to treat panic attacks are mostly anti-anxiety medications. Unfortunately, these drugs don’t really focus on the core of the problem. They are not really a long-term answer.

This is because you can’t just shut down this inborn alarm system. It is so anchored in your being that you have to shut down yourself in order to achieve that. And that’s exactly what anti-anxiety medications do. They shut you down along with your alarm. I don’t think that’s really a solution.

Fine, there is no magic pill, but is there a solution? Yes, there is. It’s not pharmaceutical, but it’s very effective. However, it does take time and effort. It’s not about shutting off the oversensitive alarm, it’s about reprogramming it. It can be successfully done, many people have done it.
