How to overcome the anxiety of leaving home for college?

March 25th, 2011

Question by corona7w: How to overcome the anxiety of leaving home for college?
I’m leaving for college in about a month and a half and the anxiety is rather overwhelming. I’ve never left my parents for long periods of time in my life, and the thought of seeing them only 4 times a year is just depressing, even though the school is around 6 hr drive from home. I keep imagining the moment when we wave goodbye to each other on move-in day, and my mom starts tearing up. (I’m tearing up right now as I write this.) Is there anyway to overcome this anxiety?

Remember that thousands of people (probably a lot of them not as smart and independent as you) do this every year. The separation will be emotional, but everyone else in your residence will be feeling the same.

Most colleges have support in place for people who are feeling overwhelmed or unhappy – take care of yourself, and never be afraid to ask for help.

Remember that it’s also really exciting! You’re going to make friends and study something you love. You’re going to learn a lot about yourself. You’ll miss your parents sometimes, but I promise you’ll have a lot of other stuff to think about, and I’m willing to bet that you’ll have a great time.

Anxiety Causes and Symptoms and Alternative Home Remedies for Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety disorders are severe medical illnesses that fill people’s lives with overwhelming anxiety and fear. It is a characteristic of many behavior disorders. It is usually concealed by the defensive behaviors. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is much more than the common anxiety which people feel in day-to-day life. Patients with generalized anxiety disorder experience worry or nervousness and a number of physical and psychological symptoms. The disorder is normally difficult to diagnose because of the variety of presentations and the common occurrence of comorbid medical or psychiatric conditions. It’s chronic and makes life tough even though there is little or nothing to provoke it. Having this disorder means always expecting disaster, often worrying excessively about health, money, family, or work. Sometimes, though, the source of the worry is hard to identify. Simply the thought of getting through the day, provokes anxiety.

Home Remedies for Anxiety

Anxiety home remedies is something that people have been using for many years to deal with anxiety. Doctors have approved some of these anxiety home remedies and say that they could be effective. They say that these can work, because it helps to change up your diet, which has been labeled as a possible way to deal with your anxiety. To start off, some good home remedies for anxiety disorders would involve almonds. Simply soak some almonds overnight in some water. This is going to help soften them up, and it will be much easier to peel the skin off. From there, you should blend up the almonds and place them in a cup of warm milk. You should add in some nutmeg and some ginger to the milk as well, which will help you relax at night. Some anxiety home remedies, however, do not involve eating anything. In fact, by adding in 1/3 cup baking soda to a warm bath, along with 1/3 cup ginger, can help to relieve tension (this is a good home remedy for tension in general).

Letting Go Of Clutter In Five Steps

May 27th, 2010

Letting go of clutter can be very hard when we have emotional attachments to the items. But if you want to improve your life and the space in your home, then it’s a necessary task. If you’re finding it difficult then here are our top five tips to get started.

1) Start Small

Letting go of clutter can seem like a never-ending task if you try to do it all in one go. To make it easier on yourself, start small by picking a small area of your home. Once this area is finished, start on the next section. Doing it in this way stops you getting overwhelmed and also helps to keep you motivated when you start seeing the results.

2) Note Down Important Memories

Some of the things we own are full of memories, which mean we develop an emotional attachment to the item. You need to realize that you can keep hold of the memories without holding onto all of the things. Just take photographs of the items you want to remember, and make little notes about them in a ‘clutter journal’ before getting rid of the items themselves.

3) Don’t Keep So Many Similar Things

Some of us have so many of very similar items. For example, you might have kept all the drawings your kids ever did for you. Although it might break your heart to get rid of them, the truth is that having so many means you’ll barely have time to look at them anyway. Choose a few items to keep that mean a lot to you and your kids, and include photographs of the rest in your clutter journal.

4) If You Haven’t Used It For A Year, Are You Really Still Going to Use It?

Sometimes items get shoved in drawers and we completely forget we even had them. If you come across something like this, then think rationally about whether you’ll really need it. This is the time to be firm with yourself – if you haven’t used it for so long then the chances are that you won’t use it – get rid of it!

5) Keep Your Goals In Mind and Feel Good About What You’re Doing

Letting go of clutter is never going to be easy. We all have emotional attachments to material things that are hard to rationalize away. When things get tough remember that you’re doing it for a good cause. Anything you give away to charity is going to help people less fortunate than you, and it’ll also benefit you in the long run. Less physical clutter means less mental clutter, and much more space in your home!

Letting go of clutter isn’t easy, but you can do some things to make it easier. For some easy to follow advice on clearing the clutter, check out Clear Clutter Blog today.
