Where did the panic attacks suddenly come from?

One day I woke up to get ready for work and I blacked out, got up and proceeded to try and still get ready  to drive my 30+ km to work and I blacked out again. I have not been able to work since that day. That was in 2001    I have had several EEG’s, EKG’S, etc. Anything to do with my heart, lungs, brain. I have been checked out thoroughly. I’ve had to wear heart monitors, EEG monitors for 2 to 3 days at a time. I have had sleep tests and nothing ever shows up. I am taking medicine for panic attacks, seizures but until this year no one knew what I have.

I have not been able to drive since that day and never been able to work. I still black out an average 10-15 times per week so I can’t even take a bus because I cannot control these panic attacks/seisures.These are so hard to prove that they really happen although I do have a few people that have witnessed my attacks. So recently I was told this is panic attacks/seizures brought on totally by stress. Finallly at least there is a name for my problem. Doesn’t help a lot though, if I take more meds I will have no life to speak of as I will be in a daze most of the time and if I stay the way I am I will always be on the edge in case I’m about to black out.

I have decided to take the chance and remain human and have a bit of a life. But next time someone tells you they have panic attacks don’t shrug it off as if they are nothing because I for one can tell you everyone is different and these things effect people from the slightess flutter in their heart to the panic turn into a seizure.

How to Save yourself from Panic Attack

How to Save yourself from Panic Attack

According To “Wikipedia” a panic attack is “A very sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, mounting psychological arousal, fear, stomach problems and discomfort that are associated with a variety of somative and cognitive ymptoms.”  The best two modalities of treatment for panic attack is relaxation and cognitive restructuring.

A panic/anxiety attack occurs when your body is extremely stressed and can no longer manage the stress. Your heart races, you start hyperventilating, your vision dims, you get dizzy. At the first sign of panic/anxiety, the key is to relax. Here are the techniques that work;

When panic sets in, sit down at comfortable place and breathe deeply. Sip a tea, hot chocolate or even a coffee. Enjoy a moment of calm. Then begin to focus on how you need to accomplish your goals.
Even if lists make you crazy, write down everything you need to do. This will help you get everything out in the open and give you a place to start.
Slow down your breathing. This may best be done blowing out every breath through pursed lips as if blowing out a candle.
Take some time out every day and listen to relaxing music.
Do Basic Yoga. Yoga is a great form of breathing and relaxation
Avoid eating junk food, it contributes to stress. Drink lots of water and eat some fruit.
Find someone to talk to about all that you are going through. Vent when things become overwhelming, but share your accomplishment also.
Even if you aren’t a distance runner, your body will benefit from a brisk walk, time on treadmill, or a roller blade round the neighbor. So be active to beat that stress.

Naturally Calm Down From a Panic Attack

Naturally Calm Down From a Panic Attack

Panic attacks occur when the body is in ‘fight or flight’ mode, typically choosing flight.  It can be one of the most terrifying experiences a person will ever face.  Be calmed, however, knowing you cannot die from a panic attack.  You are not losing your mind.  Your heart is not going to explode.  All you need to do is take breaths and talk yourself down.  I will share with you some tips I have gotten since I began experiencing my own panic attacks.

The first thing you should know, is to stay seated. Many times when your heart skips a beat or starts to beat irregularly, the first idea is to stand.  Don’t do this.  This action will cause your heart to beat faster, causing you to fly into a frenzy.  Instead, stay where you are.  Close your eyes and lead your head fall back.  Whatever you do, do NOT take your pulse.  This is my worst habit and always causes me to panic more.

Fall into a comfortable position and invision a stop sign in your head.  Imagine that this stop sign is getting closer and closer to you until it is blazing in your mind.  While invisioning this stop sign, take deep, calming breaths.

When you feel confident enough, open your eyes and move somewhere comfortable.  Many people advise others that are having a panic attack to go out into the open, but that has always scared me.  I prefer small places during this time.  So whether you want to be outside or inside, go somewhere you feel comfortable and will not trigger you to panic anymore.

Lay down and relax every muscle in your body.  I like to start from my head and go down to my toes.  Your body is going to feel very heavy- don’t worry, that is completely normal.  This should make you feel a tad bit calmer.  And remember, keep your breaths steady.

Play some relaxing music while you’re doing this.  I like jazz, but it can be anything you want.  Just make sure it is calm and brings about relaxation, not excitement. (So, nothing like heavy metal or rock.  I would even say no to pop and alternative).  Let your mind get swept away by the music and by your steady breathing.

If none of this is helping, try distracting yourself.  If anyone is awake, go downstairs and talk to someone.  I have found that this helps the best.  Panic attacks are always scariest when you’re alone, but if you’ve calmed yourself down enough to be in company, I would highly advise you to find some.  Even if all you can do is make a phone call, then make it.  It will bring about so much comfort to hear someone else’s voice.

One more thing:  I have found that when I am having a panic attack, I can generally control them unless I start crying.  It seems crying is a release of control and everything flies out the window then.  So, if you can, try holding back those tears and see if it helps!
