Does Your Dog Experience Dog Separation Anxiety?

Does Your Dog Experience Dog Separation Anxiety?

If you think the notion of a dog having anxiety sounds silly, you should know that it’s a very real condition.  In fact, veterinarians estimate that around 15% of all dogs show signs of anxiety – these may be the things your dog does when you think he’s just being a ‘bad dog.’  Unfortunately, anxiety can become worse and worse if left untreated and your dog could be very upset and sick.  Humans are able to let each other know when something is wrong – whether we feel sad, alone or depressed.  Dogs are not able to tell us in words, so they tell us in actions.

Have you ever noticed your dog barking excessively when you leave the room or when you’ve gone outside?  How about coming home to a wrecked house, chewed shoes, and surprises waiting for you on the carpet?  These may be your dog’s way of showing you that he is upset and experiencing separation anxiety.  In fact, he may be so anxious that he stays an inch behind you no matter where you go, watches every move you make and wants to keep you in his sight.

You may also notice that he grooms himself constantly – including licking his paws, scratching or gnawing at himself.  You may also notice that he drools a lot at times – while some owners think this comes along with the fur and paws, it could be hypersalivation, another sign of anxiety in dogs.  Just a few other signs he could display to show you that he’s feeling anxious include having an upset stomach, not wanting to play or eat his food, trying to get out of the house or demanding your attention when you return home.

These behaviors occur because it’s the dog’s instinctual response to being upset or afraid.  If your dog was a rescue from a shelter, a pet store or if he showed up as a stray, you may notice this behavior even more.  It is more common in pets that have been abandoned or stuck in cages at stores and shelters.  It is also more common in puppies than in older dogs, but older dogs can experience it as well.

Some veterinarians prescribe a form of an antidepressant called clomipramine hydrochloride.  This is similar to an antidepressant a human would take which increases serotonin – a chemical which increases happiness and a general feeling of well-being.  Clomipramine hydrochloride does not make your dog sleepy, although it can make him feel like laying around a bit more than you may be used to.

Behavior modification is another great way that owners help their dogs feel less anxious and afraid.  This method is used to make your dog feel more comfortable and get out of learned habits such as excessive grooming or barking.  Punishment is never a good idea for a dog that may have separation anxiety.  This will only make the situation worse and your dog will surely not understand why he’s being punished because he’s sick.  The behaviors will probably increase and your dog will probably be even more anxious if you show aggression or punish him for separation anxiety.

Personal experience with Anxiety & Depression

Personal experience with Anxiety & Depression

Personal experience with Anxiety & Depression

Stress today has taken over the way we live and our approach to life. Anxiety is nothing but the way we react to stress.  Anxiety is a constant fear, which if not successfully accomplished can lead to an anxiety disorder. Fears could vary the fear of failing in an exam, or the fear of being late for an important meeting, or the fear of missing the train are some of the common fears. This kind of anxiety in a way helps us to be more focused and thus deliver the desired results.

As a working woman, I surely could have been a victim of anxiety disorder. I remember the anxiety I would go through every single day when I would feel helpless, being stuck in traffic to reach work on time.  Then there is an anxiety of being watched and being a topic for gossip among colleagues and of course the fear of being reprimanded for coming in late.

Also, with my child going to school, I would constantly be anxious about him too. Hope he remembers the poem, he memorised last night, hope he had his lunch, and hope he crossed the road carefully. Thanks to the mobile invention, I can manage to keep a tab on his whereabouts.

But unlike some people, anxiety helped me be a better planner and be more organised. On a personal front, I would make sure I wake up well in advance, so that I have made provision for the time I may have to spend in traffic, a result of which I would reach office before time. I have enough time to prepare meals for my family and it makes me happy to know that they are well fed and looked after. Since I am early at work, I can leave office in time, work effectively without nagging myself with, ““Oh ! I reached late today, how can I leave at 6:00 in the evening. My entire schedule is going to go for a toss.”

Depression is the feeling of hopelessness, the feeling of impending doom.  Depressed people, usually lose their zest for life. These people lose interest in friends, hobbies and past times they once enjoyed.

There is a close family friend, who could be cited as the best example of beauty with brains. Though she was an MBA – Finance, she always aspired to be a model and work for the best brands, like her sister did. But, not always do we get all that we aspire for. She kept going for auditions for modelling assignments and somehow never got selected. Most people cannot handle rejection, and she was probably one of them. In no time, she slipped into depression. She felt lifeless and there was a constant urge to end her life.  “If this is what life was meant to be I don’t want to live”, is all she said. Sadly, no one took her warnings seriously. She got addicted to anti depressant pills and her intake was over 20 pills per day. Until one day, when her parents found her dead due to an overdose of sleeping pills.

Just because a suicidal person does not ask for help, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want it. No one would want to die, – they want to stop feeling miserable. It’s important to spend time with such people, they need professional help. Meet a counsellor, let them know it’s not their fault, show them alternatives and highlight their strengths and achievements.
