A panic attack is a swift feeling of being in danger, feeling of apprehension without the existence of real danger. It would usually happen unexpectedly and within minutes and will eventually subside. The symptoms of panic attack would appear suddenly and without any obvious reason. This may include chest pains, racing or pounding heartbeat, stomach upset, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, difficulty in breathing, numbness in the hands, chills, trembling, nervousness and many others. The span of panic attacks would usually be just 10 minutes, however it is still one of the most difficult conditions that any person could experience. Its symptoms are even sometimes mimicking those of heart attack. However, there are really emotional problems which have panic attack as its symptoms. Some of these are schizophrenia, intoxication, posttraumatic stress disorder, or withdrawal from a drug abuse. A person who experiences several panic attacks without noticeable emotional or physical cause is considered to be having a panic disorder. Thus, it is important to avoid panic attack. There are some biological explanations about panic attacks but most people who are suffering from it have external factors as the cause. But there are really no specific cause for having panic attacks. Like other emotional symptoms, panic is considered to be an effect of the blend of biological vulnerabilities, social stressors as well as way of thinking. The body has its own alarm system which is composed of physical and mental mechanisms allowing a person to react on a threat which sometimes is activated gratuitously and without any reason at all. Studies still were not able to find out why panic attacks happen or why there are people who are more prone to having problem than others. But it is said to be running in families although there are people who develop it at some point of their lives. In the US, panic attacks are considered to be a serious health problem. One fifth of the population of adult Americans or about 60 million people are expected to undergo panic attacks at a certain point of their lives. Most people would experience their first panic attack at the age’s of15-19 years old. However, there are still ways on how to avoid panic attacks. With the advancement in technology and continuous research, there are already varieties of techniques available to avoid panic attacks.
