Large bridges, semi trucks, and large freeways can all bring on driving anxiety. And it seems like these attacks could happen at any time.
Unfortunately, driving anxiety can affect your social life as well. It can force you to choose to stay at home when you would rather want to travel and see your friends and relatives.
If you’re suffering from driving anxiety here are five tips to help you stop from suffering these attacks, or at least relieve some of the symptoms.
1. Take a less busy road
If at all possible avoid busy roads like freeways during rush hour. These busy roads can make you feel trapped and forced to drive at speeds that you are not comfortable with.
2. Listen to music
It’s best to listen to peaceful music and avoid listening to talk radio stations while you’re driving. Avoid any type of music that can increase your stress level.
3. Keep a narrow focus
Similar to focusing on your breathing, just focusing on the road directly in front of you can be very peaceful. Many people get worried about upcoming bridges or traffic, but just try and focus on the road in front of you.
4. Don’t drink coffee
While many people feel that they need coffee to drive better, it is also one of the biggest causes of anxiety attacks. Remember caffeine stays in your system for many hours.
5. Have a light snack
Some people tend to not want to eat because they know they will be driving soon. But an empty stomach can add to your stress levels so try and have a light snack before driving.
Sometimes it’s best to look for different ways to get to work if you’re suffering from severe driving anxiety. You may want to think about taking a bus to work or asking a coworker for a ride.
Some people find that driving on roads that bring them anxiety during non-peak hours can help build up their driving confidence again.
